Core Career

1) Private Sector:The private sector opportunities in India in ECE are considerably scarce. The big companies are MNCs which have their development centers in Bangalore or Hyderabad such as Intel, Bell Labs etc. These MNCs mostly take students from campuses of prestigious institutions such as IITs. (For example, National Instruments, a semiconductor MNC comes in IIT Indore campus). Otherwise, you have to show exceptional talent and apply directly.


2) Public Sector:

The public sector has more opportunities for ECE than CS/IT, but you have to face tough competitive examinations to get in. You can divide these in three parts-

A) PSUs:

These are public sector companies, that either take applications based on GATE score and interview or hold their own exams and interview.

B) IES:

Indian Engineering Services are considered the most prestigious job profile for Engineers in India, equivalent to what IAS are in administration or IPS in Police. The selection is through Engineering Services Examination (ESE) which is among the most competitive exams in India. A google search on ESE would give you all details on the exam such as exam pattern, syllabus etc.

C) Research Institutions:

Major public research institutions under three wings of Govt Of India i.e. Dept of Space (DOS), Dept of Defense (DoD) & Dept of Atomic Energy (DAE), there are

i) ISRO- The highly efficient space agency of India, and the many institutions under its umbrella. The recruitment is through ISRO ICRB Annual Recruitment Examination followed by interview.

ii) DRDO- the defense development agency of India. Similar recruitment like ISRO.

iii) BARC- Bhabha Atomic Research Center, GATE scorecard followed by interview.

It is advisable to start preparation for these examinations right from 1st yr.

Regarding courses, it is always beneficial to learn a bit more practical stuff and make projects, specially for private sector. We all know that most Indian universities are not focusing on experimentation and innovation in Engineering.
